Each of the 8 questions scores 0 to 3 points based on how severe the symptom is. We total your score out of 24 and map it to Minor, Moderate or Severe. The system is based on the same triage questions our assessors ask when they arrive on site for a free assessment.

Moderate means the surface is ageing and showing early failure signs, but you usually still have time to plan. Most Moderate pools can be resurfaced without extensive structural prep, which keeps the cost closer to the lower end of the range. Ignoring a Moderate pool for another 2 years typically pushes it into Severe territory — where prep work adds thousands.

Severe usually means multiple symptoms at once: widespread peeling, rough texture, persistent algae, visible cracks, and obvious fading. Severe doesn't mean the pool is beyond saving — we resurface Severe pools every week — but it does mean the assessment is more urgent and the scope of work is larger.

No. We used to paint pools, and about 50% of the jobs failed within 2-3 years. Paint can't address the underlying issues that cause most of the symptoms in this checker — it just hides them for a while. Full resurfacing is more expensive upfront but costs far less over the lifetime of the pool.

You can, and the scoring works the same way. However, commercial and strata pools have additional compliance considerations that the checker doesn't capture.
