Winterising Your Pool in Adelaide: Step-by-Step Guide

Winterise your Adelaide pool the right way with this step-by-step guide. Chemicals, equipment shutdown, cover options and surface protection.

Winterising your Adelaide pool correctly saves real money. Properly winterised pools start spring clean, need less chemical rebalancing, and don’t suffer equipment damage from neglect. Half-winterised pools are green by August and need aggressive shock treatments to recover. This step-by-step winterising guide gets you to spring in good shape.

Adelaide winter pool care: what you actually need to do

Adelaide doesn’t freeze. That changes the winterising approach compared to colder climates where pools are shut down entirely. In Adelaide, pools stay active through winter — you just run them less and care for them differently.

Step-by-step winterising an Adelaide pool

Step 1: Full clean-up in late autumn

Before winter starts properly (end of April through May), give the pool a full clean. Vacuum out debris, scrub the waterline, clean the tile band, empty skimmer baskets, and clean the filter. Starting winter with a clean pool is half the battle.

Step 2: Chemistry check and shock

Test water chemistry thoroughly and adjust to target ranges. Free chlorine 3 to 4 ppm, pH 7.2 to 7.6, alkalinity 80 to 120 ppm. Then shock the pool with calcium hypochlorite to raise chlorine to 10+ ppm briefly. This kills anything that might otherwise hibernate and restart in spring.

Step 3: Raise stabiliser slightly

If your stabiliser (cyanuric acid) is under 30 ppm, bring it up to 30 to 40 ppm. Stabiliser protects chlorine from the remaining UV through winter, letting lower chlorine levels still do their job.

Step 4: Reduce filter run times

Drop filter run time from summer’s 8 to 10 hours to winter’s 3 to 4 hours per day. Never turn the pump off completely — stagnant water develops algae and bacterial issues fast. A short daily cycle maintains circulation and chemistry distribution.

Step 5: Set an automated timer

If your pump isn’t on a timer, put one in. Winter pump running should be during the warmest daylight hours (11am to 2pm typically) to take advantage of the small warming effect and maximise UV exposure on water.

Step 6: Fit a pool cover

A pool cover is the single biggest win for winter pool care. Benefits:

  • Keeps leaves, twigs and debris out
  • Reduces water loss through evaporation
  • Reduces chemical loss
  • Reduces UV breakdown of chlorine
  • Keeps the pool warmer, extending usable season
  • Saves significant cleaning time through winter

Options range from cheap blanket covers ($200 to $500) to premium winter debris covers ($800 to $2,500) to automatic retractable covers ($4,000+).

Step 7: Fortnightly maintenance schedule

Instead of weekly maintenance, winter pools typically only need attention fortnightly. Tasks per visit:

  • Empty skimmer basket
  • Test chemistry and adjust chlorine if needed
  • Brush walls and steps briefly
  • Check water level
  • Inspect cover for tears or issues

Step 8: Monthly detailed checks

  • Full chemistry test including alkalinity and calcium
  • Filter pressure check, backwash or clean if needed
  • Visual inspection of pump, filter, heater
  • Coping and surface inspection for winter damage
  • Safety fence check

Step 9: Protect equipment from cold snaps

Adelaide rarely freezes but the occasional cold snap can damage exposed pipework. Make sure:

  • Pump and plumbing are protected from direct rain exposure
  • Chlorinator cells are free of calcium build-up that reduces flow
  • Heater (if fitted) is drained or running to prevent freeze damage in exposed runs

What NOT to do when winterising an Adelaide pool

Don’t turn the pump off completely

Unlike pools in freezing climates, Adelaide pools shouldn’t be fully shut down. Stagnant water develops algae and bacterial issues within weeks, and you’ll spend more recovering in spring than you save on winter power.

Don’t drain the pool

Draining a pool creates serious problems. Concrete pools can lift if groundwater is high. Fibreglass pools can crack or bulge under empty stress. Drained pools deteriorate fast in weather. If you need to drain for major work, hire professionals who understand shell hydraulics.

Don’t ignore rain

Adelaide winter brings rain — sometimes a lot of it. Heavy rain raises pool level, dilutes chemistry, and stresses filters with debris. Check and adjust after each significant rain event.

Don’t forget about surface inspection

Winter is when surface damage from summer often becomes visible. Cracks, staining and wear that were hidden by constant sun and warm water become obvious. Note anything concerning so you can plan repairs or resurfacing in late winter or early spring.

Winter resurfacing: the thing most people don’t know

Most Adelaide pool owners assume you can’t resurface a pool in winter because of the rain. That’s true for almost every pool contractor — but not us. We own four weather-protection structures specifically so we can resurface in any weather, including through the wettest Adelaide winters. This means:

  • You don’t have to wait until November
  • The pool is ready for summer in October with time to spare
  • Contractors are less booked during winter so scheduling is easier
  • You save stress and rushed work closer to swimming season

Read our pool resurfacing in winter article for the full picture, and our rain protection system for how we actually do it.

Common winterising mistakes

  • Over-chlorinating at start of winter (chlorine burns off anyway, just top up as needed)
  • Skipping cover purchase and fighting debris all winter
  • Not adjusting filter run times
  • Ignoring pH drift (rain lowers pH significantly)
  • Forgetting about the pump and finding it seized in August
