Pool Surface Types Compared: Pebblecrete, Fibreglass, Plaster and More

Complete guide to pool surface types — pebblecrete, fibreglass, plaster, epoxy and more. Pros, cons, lifespans and which is right for your pool.

Choosing between pool surface types is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make when resurfacing. Pebblecrete, fibreglass, quartz plaster, epoxy and more each have distinct pros, cons, lifespans and price points. This guide lays out what each one is actually made of, how it holds up in Adelaide conditions, and which is right for your pool.

The main pool surface types in Australia

Here are the six surface types you’ll hear about when researching pool resurfacing. Each one belongs on a different kind of pool, and each behaves differently over 15+ years.

1. Pebblecrete (exposed aggregate)

A mixture of cement and small stones (pebble, glass, quartz) applied to concrete pools. The cement is washed off the surface to expose the pebbles, which gives pebblecrete its distinctive textured look. The pebbles provide grip and durability.

  • Best for: Concrete pools (not fibreglass)
  • Lifespan: 15 to 25+ years
  • Cost 2026: $17,000 to $24,000 for standard 8m x 4m pool
  • Pros: Longest-lasting, most traditional look, tough against wear
  • Cons: Textured feel underfoot (some love it, some don’t)

2. Fibreglass flowcoat

A pigmented polyester resin layer applied to fibreglass pool shells. It’s essentially a new exterior layer of the fibreglass shell — not a coating. This is the proper resurface for any fibreglass pool.

  • Best for: Fibreglass pools (not concrete)
  • Lifespan: 15 to 25 years
  • Cost 2026: $14,000 to $17,000 for standard 8m x 4m pool
  • Pros: Completely smooth, structurally bonded to the shell, low maintenance
  • Cons: Only works on fibreglass substrates

3. Quartz plaster

A white cement mixture with crushed quartz granules. Smoother than pebblecrete but tougher than pure plaster. A mid-range option for concrete pools.

  • Best for: Concrete pools where a smoother feel is preferred
  • Lifespan: 12 to 18 years
  • Cost 2026: $16,000 to $22,000
  • Pros: Smooth feel, lighter colour options, durable
  • Cons: Not as long-lasting as pebblecrete, more sensitive to water chemistry

4. White cement plaster (marblesheen)

The oldest and most traditional concrete pool surface. White portland cement plus marble dust. Smooth, bright white appearance. Mostly replaced by quartz and pebblecrete in modern pools but still found in older ones.

  • Best for: Traditional aesthetic restorations
  • Lifespan: 10 to 15 years
  • Cost 2026: $15,000 to $20,000
  • Pros: Classic white appearance
  • Cons: Softer, less durable, more maintenance

5. Epoxy pool paint

A two-pack epoxy coating applied to prepped surfaces. It’s a paint, not a resurface, and we group it here for completeness. Martin has been training people in surface prep for 30+ years, and we stopped recommending epoxy pool paint because of the callback rate. Read more in our epoxy pool paint article.

  • Best for: Very short-term cosmetic refresh only
  • Lifespan: 3 to 7 years
  • Cost 2026: $6,000 to $10,000
  • Pros: Cheaper upfront, faster
  • Cons: ~50% callback rate industry-wide, peels, costs more per year of service

6. Glass bead or coloured aggregate finishes

Premium versions of pebblecrete using crushed glass, coloured ceramic chips, or exotic aggregates. Used when the pool is the centrepiece of a high-end backyard.

  • Best for: Statement pools with architectural focus
  • Lifespan: 15 to 25 years
  • Cost 2026: $20,000 to $32,000+
  • Pros: Unique visual effect, sparkles under light, highly durable
  • Cons: More expensive, limited colour availability

How to pick the right pool surface type for your pool

Start with pool type

If you have a fibreglass pool, flowcoat is the right choice. No exceptions. Fibreglass shells don’t accept aggregate finishes or plaster. See our fibreglass resurfacing service.

If you have a concrete pool, you have options. Pebblecrete is our default recommendation for most concrete pools because it lasts longest. Quartz plaster is a good alternative for owners who prefer a smoother feel. Our concrete pool resurfacing service covers all options.

Consider the budget

For fibreglass: flowcoat is the only real option. Budget $14,000 to $17,000.

For concrete: quartz plaster is the cheapest proper surface, pebblecrete is mid-range, and coloured aggregate finishes are premium. Budget $16,000 to $32,000 depending on choice. Use our cost estimator for real numbers.

Consider the feel

Pebblecrete is textured. Flowcoat is glass-smooth. Quartz is in between. If you have kids playing pool games and sliding around the walls, you might prefer smoother. If you want grip on the stairs and steps, texture is an advantage.

Consider longevity vs upfront cost

A surface that lasts 20 years at $16,000 is cheaper per year than one that lasts 8 years at $10,000. When you’re comparing options, look at the lifetime cost rather than just the quote.

Why the prep work matters more than the surface choice

Here’s something most articles won’t tell you. The specific surface type matters less than the quality of preparation before it goes on. A poorly-prepped quartz surface fails faster than a well-prepped plaster one. A rushed pebblecrete job will look worse at 5 years than a quality flowcoat at 15.

Our 30+ years in surface preparation is why we can deliver near-zero defect rates across all surface types. We own four weather-protection structures so the prep never gets rushed by rain. Read our BlueRevive system article for why prep is the single biggest factor. Check the full cost guide for more detail.
