Real before and after pool resurfacing projects from Adelaide show what’s possible with the right preparation, the right materials, and experienced hands. We’ve worked on pools that looked beyond saving — peeling, stained, rough, algae-ridden, structurally compromised — and brought them back to genuinely new condition. This article walks through typical transformations and what the process looked like for each one.
Why before and after matters more than stock images
Every pool resurfacing company has stunning before and after photos on their website. Most of them are stock images or the best single example from a decade of work. Real before and after results from actual local Adelaide jobs tell a more honest story. They show what an ageing 1980s pebblecrete pool looks like before and after full resurfacing. They show what happens when you strip four layers of failed paint off a neglected pool and lay down fresh flowcoat. They show what can be done for a strata pool that’s been closed for two years.
We’ve done hundreds of these transformations across Adelaide. Here are the representative stories.
Case 1: 40-year-old pebblecrete family pool
Before
8m x 4m kidney-shape pebblecrete pool from 1982. Surface had been painted twice in its life, with paint failing in large sheets. Underlying pebblecrete was exposed in places, with worn aggregate and deep calcium scale build-up. Black spot algae in multiple areas. Rough to walk on.
The work
3 days of grinding to remove paint layers down to sound pebblecrete. Crack repair in two areas. Fresh pebblecrete application in a mid-blue colour to match the owner’s new coping. Full cure and refill.
After
Pool looks newer than when it was built. Water colour is clear, bright and inviting. Surface is smooth, no algae, no staining. Family is swimming daily where they hadn’t for years. 15+ year surface life expected.
Timeline
19 days start to finish. Completed in July with weather structures in place — no delays.
Case 2: 25-year-old fibreglass pool with osmosis
Before
9m x 4m fibreglass pool from 1999. Gelcoat was chalking badly (white residue on hands). Multiple small osmosis blisters across the deep end wall. Coping tiles cracked in several places.
The work
Full mechanical grinding of the old gelcoat. Osmosis repair with laminating resin and fibreglass matting in affected areas. Bond coat. Two coats of flowcoat in a pale turquoise colour. Coping tile replacement included.
After
Smooth as new glass underfoot. Water looks tropical rather than the old murky grey. No more chalking, no osmosis, no cracked tiles. Owner reports the pool looks “better than when we bought it 12 years ago.”
Timeline
16 days. September start, completed in early October just in time for summer.
Case 3: Neglected strata pool that had been closed
Before
18m rectangular concrete pool in a retirement village. Had been closed for 18 months due to compliance issues and deteriorating surface. Pebblecrete was worn through in high-traffic areas. Waterline tiles cracked and missing. Expansion joint failing. Equipment needed replacing.
The work
Commercial-scale project. Drain, grind, structural repair, new pebblecrete, new waterline tiles, coping replacement, pump and filter replacement, chlorinator upgrade, compliance sign-off.
After
Pool reopened for residents. Fully compliant. Water quality consistent and easy to manage with new equipment. Resident satisfaction restored. Body corporate avoided much bigger costs of a total rebuild.
Timeline
6 weeks including equipment work. Completed through winter to reopen for spring.
Case 4: Concrete pool with chronic black spot
Before
7m x 4m concrete pool with quartz plaster from the early 2000s. Battling recurring black spot algae for 5 years. Repeated shocking and treatment only killed visible algae temporarily. Surface was pitted from algae root damage.
The work
Full grind back of the worn plaster. Substrate inspection revealed sound concrete. Fresh quartz plaster application with particular attention to eliminating every pit where algae could root.
After
Black spot completely gone. One season later, still no recurrence. Surface smooth, water clear. Read our black spot algae article for why resurfacing is often the only permanent fix.
Timeline
13 days. Standard quartz timeline.
Case 5: 1970s marblesheen pool
Before
8m x 4m rectangular pool with original marblesheen from 1978. Surface etched beyond repair, with sharp exposed aggregate and years of staining embedded in porous surface. Owners had considered demolition but wanted to try resurfacing first.
The work
Full marblesheen removal — slow but thorough. Substrate found to be in good shape (concrete construction of the era was often excellent). Fresh pebblecrete application in a charcoal colour for a modern aesthetic refresh.
After
Complete visual transformation from 1970s to 2020s look. Colour change alone made the backyard feel newer. Surface smooth and durable. Expected 20+ year life.
Timeline
21 days including decorative features and coping replacement.
What these transformations have in common
Every one of these pools was saved by full resurfacing rather than replaced or written off. A few common threads:
1. Proper surface preparation
Grinding, cleaning, substrate repair. Nothing gets skipped. This is the single biggest factor in whether a resurface lasts.
2. Appropriate materials for the pool type
Flowcoat for fibreglass. Pebblecrete or quartz for concrete. Right material for the right situation.
3. Weather protection during work
None of these jobs got delayed or compromised by weather. Our four weather-protection structures let us work year-round. See our rain protection system.
4. Experienced crew
Martin has 30+ years in surface preparation through Paint Professionals, and we’ve trained 16 apprentices. This shows up in every finished pool.
What’s possible for your pool
If your pool looks beyond saving, it probably isn’t. We’ve brought back pools that were:
- Stained and discoloured for years
- Peeling and delaminating in sheets
- Rough and dangerous to walk on
- Battling recurring algae
- Fighting osmosis and fibreglass breakdown
- Neglected and effectively abandoned
Full resurfacing with proper prep and quality materials transforms any of these scenarios. See our pool resurfacing service or read about what happens during a resurface for the full process.
