Pebblecrete Pool Resurfacing Cost Breakdown

Pebblecrete pool resurfacing cost guide for Adelaide pool owners. Materials, labour, prep work and what really drives the price.

Pebblecrete pool resurfacing cost is one of the most common questions we get from owners of 20-to-40-year-old Adelaide pools. Pebblecrete (sometimes called pebble finish or exposed aggregate) was standard on concrete pools built through the 70s, 80s and 90s. When it starts getting rough, spotty or patchy, resurfacing is the fix. Here’s what it actually costs in 2026, and what goes into that number.

What is pebblecrete resurfacing?

Pebblecrete resurfacing applies a new aggregate finish over a properly prepared concrete substrate. The process is similar across all aggregate finishes: grind back the old surface, repair cracks and hollow spots, bond coat, apply the new pebble finish, polish and wash off the cement layer to expose the stones, then refill.

How it differs from plaster or quartz

Plaster is smoother and whiter but softer. Quartz sits in the middle. Pebblecrete is the toughest and longest-lasting but has a textured feel underfoot. Most Adelaide pool owners resurfacing an old concrete pool are going back to pebblecrete because it suits the pool and matches the backyard aesthetic.

Pebblecrete pool resurfacing cost ranges 2026

Here’s the real cost picture for pebblecrete pool resurfacing in Adelaide this year.

  • Small concrete pool (under 7m): $14,000 to $18,000
  • Standard concrete pool (8m x 4m): $17,000 to $22,000
  • Large concrete pool (10m+): $22,000 to $30,000
  • Pools with significant crack repair or major hollow areas: Add $3,000 to $8,000

These numbers reflect full pebblecrete resurfacing with proper substrate prep, not cheap overlays. For your specific pool, use our cost estimator tool or check the breakdown on our pool resurfacing cost guide.

What drives pebblecrete resurfacing cost

Substrate condition

Concrete pools built well in the 80s can still have sound substrate 40 years later. Concrete pools built poorly can have drummy patches, hollow sections, reinforcement corrosion and cracks that all need repair before any new surface goes on. We’ve seen jobs where prep and structural repair took as long as the resurfacing itself.

Aggregate type and colour

Standard pebble costs less than glass bead finishes or coloured aggregates. Darker colours generally cost slightly more than lighter ones because of pigment pricing.

Pool shape

Rectangular pools are easiest. Freeform pools, pools with steps, swim-outs and spa sections all add labour because each feature needs hand application and detail work.

Coping and tile replacement

Most pebblecrete pools being resurfaced need at least partial coping replacement and waterline tile work. Doing it at the same time is efficient, and significantly cheaper than doing it separately, but it does add $2,000 to $8,000 to the overall quote.

The prep work nobody tells you about

Pebblecrete pools are harder to resurface than fibreglass pools. The old surface has to be mechanically removed (not just sanded), every crack has to be chased out and filled, and any hollow or drummy sections need to be identified and repaired. This is where cheap quotes cut corners.

We spend 30+ years of surface-preparation experience (through our parent company Paint Professionals) on every job. Skipping prep is the number one reason pool resurfaces fail within five years. Martin trained 16 apprentices in this exact discipline, and it’s the difference between a 15-year result and a 2-year disaster. Read the BlueRevive system for more on why prep matters.

Cheap quotes to watch out for

If you’re seeing pebblecrete resurfacing quotes under $12,000 for a standard 8m x 4m pool, something is being skipped. Most commonly:

  • No mechanical grinding (just a sand and paint approach)
  • No crack repair or just surface fillers
  • Thin pebble layer (instead of proper 10mm+ thickness)
  • No bonding coat (the new surface sits on old cement dust and fails)
  • Vague or no warranty

A cheap quote today is an expensive redo in three years. Our concrete pool resurfacing service page walks through our exact prep process.

Timeline for a pebblecrete resurface

A standard pebblecrete job runs 2 to 3 weeks from drain to refill. Weather has historically been the biggest delay, but we own four weather-protection structures, so we resurface year-round — even in winter. Read more on pool resurfacing in winter for how we keep projects on schedule through Adelaide’s wet months.

Pebblecrete colour and texture choices

Pebblecrete is available in dozens of colour blends, from bright whites through mid-blues, greens, greys and charcoals. The colour you choose affects both the upfront cost (premium coloured aggregates cost more) and the ongoing look of the water. Lighter pebbles produce bright, tropical water. Darker pebbles produce moody, jewel-toned water. Read our pebblecrete pool colours guide for detail on how each option looks in Adelaide light conditions.

How pebblecrete compares to quartz plaster

Quartz plaster is a smoother alternative for concrete pools. It costs slightly less (typically ,000 to ,000 cheaper on a standard pool), has a smoother feel underfoot, and lasts 12 to 18 years versus 15 to 25 for pebblecrete. If you want the longest-lasting concrete pool surface, choose pebblecrete. If you want smoothness and don’t mind a slightly shorter lifespan, quartz is a legitimate alternative. Both are far better options than pool paint, which fails at much higher rates.
